How to get more snow plow customers this winter

The best time to sign plow customers is before the first flake. Here's where they come from, how to lock them in, and how to keep them once the storms start.

Snow work can turn a slow winter into a strong one, but most plow routes are built the same way lawn routes are: a few customers at a time, mostly from people who already know you. The good news is that you probably already have your best prospects in your phone.

Start with the customers you already have

Your lawn and cleanup clients already trust you, already know your truck, and already have your number. Many of them will need a plow and would rather hire someone they know than search for a stranger in December.

Send every past customer a short text in the fall:

Fall snow text you can copyHi Tom, it's Mike from Green Ridge. We're filling our snow plowing route for this winter and have a few driveways left on your street. Want me to save you a spot? Reply YES and I'll send the details.

Mentioning their street works because route density matters to you, and neighbors like hearing that the plow is already coming by.

Pick a pricing model and explain it simply

Most plow operators use one of three approaches:

  • Seasonal contract: one price for the winter, paid upfront or in installments. Steady income for you, predictable cost for them.
  • Per push: charged each time you plow, often based on snow depth. Fair for the customer, but less predictable for you.
  • Seasonal with a cap: a set number of pushes included, with extra storms billed separately.

Whichever you choose, put it in writing and keep it short. Customers sign faster when they understand exactly what triggers a visit, such as "2 inches or more," and what happens in a big storm.

Set a sign-up deadline

A deadline gives people a reason to act now instead of "when it snows." Something like "Seasonal contracts close November 15" works well. It also helps you plan your route and equipment before the first storm, rather than adding driveways on the fly.

Make it easy to say yes: a contract they can sign on their phone and a payment link, instead of paper and checks.

Show up when people search

When the first storm hits, plenty of homeowners search "snow removal near me." To show up:

  • Add snow plowing as a service on your Google Business Profile
  • Give snow removal its own page on your website, listing the towns you cover
  • Post a winter photo of your truck on Google and Facebook in the fall
  • Ask happy plow customers for a Google review after the first few storms

Fill in the gaps on your route

Driveways close together are worth more to you than scattered ones. When you sign a new customer, consider a simple door hanger or a friendly note for the houses on either side: "We're plowing your neighbor's driveway this winter and have room for a few more on your street." Ask existing customers too. Neighbors talk, and a referral from next door closes fast.

Keep plow customers happy during storms

The number one complaint in snow season isn't price. It's not knowing when the plow is coming. A quick group text on storm days heads off most of the calls:

Storm-day text you can copyHeads up from Green Ridge: we're out plowing now and will keep making rounds as it comes down. Most driveways will be cleared by 7 a.m. Reply if you need us there earlier for work.

A short note after the season, thanking them and offering spring cleanup, turns your winter customers into year-round ones.

A quick checklist

  • Fall text sent to every past lawn and cleanup customer
  • Pricing model picked and written up in plain language
  • Sign-up deadline set and announced
  • Contracts signed and paid online
  • Snow removal on your Google profile and its own web page
  • Storm-day text ready to send
